Salcedo is the capital city of the Hermanas Mirabal province, located to the north of the Dominican Republic. Salcedo is famous for being the birthplace of the Mirabal Sisters, three sisters who died fighting the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. The Cordillera Septentrional runs through the north side of the city. The rivers of this province are short-distance and the most important are CenovĂ, BacuĂ, and Jayabo. An interesting place is the Museum and the Monument to the Mirabal Sisters in the towns of Conoco and Ojo de Agua, respectively. Starting in 2006, the Ruta de Los Murales initiative has been developed, becoming today the largest pictorial muralist exhibition in the Dominican Republic and the insular Caribbean. Salcedo is an eminent agricultural city being the main products of banana, yucca, cocoa, and coffee. Tourism is almost nonexistent with little accommodation, one hotel, La Casona Gran Imperial.
